Watchable Wildlife
Written by: Kirk Beckendorf
Students from Mission View Elementary School in Wenatchee, and recently from the Discovery School in Leavenworth, have deployed trail cameras at riparian restoration sites and forest locations. Our partner landowners have been essential in the success of this project, and the wildlife captured by the cameras on their properties documents the diversity of wildlife using their healthy habitats. According to WDFW, (which has provided funding for the student trail camera project) more the 75% of all land-based species in Washington use riparian areas as habitat.
When out deploying cameras, the students search, with guidance from Cascadia staff, for signs of wildlife, such as tracks and trails, claw marks and scat. Based on those observations, teams of students select specific locations at which to install their cameras.
Recently, and in less than a week, the students captured multiple species including bears. You can view videos (like a deer with the zoomies) from the long-term project with Mission View Elementary on our You Tube Channel.
